Update re Canterbury City Council ‘Call for Sites’ as part of the District Plan to 2040

Canterbury City Council’s 2040 Local Plan
Natural Environment and Renewable Energy opportunities.
In response to Canterbury City Council’s Call (CCC) for Green Sites, Herne & Broomfield Parish Council have suggested some important locations within their parish boundary, as they are considered to be of high community value in protecting the rural community environment, considering the planned housing and business developments over the next few years.
The aim is to establish some outline concepts and identify environmentally important areas that could support the Parish, City and County Council objectives for long-term sustainability developments and establish appropriate planning strategies.
CCC intend to commence further, more detailed consultations in the Summer or Autumn of 2022, and will publish their initial findings in due course as part of their evaluation.

Update 5th August 2021:
We are pleased to report that it has been confirmed by the owners, that both sites at Hawe Farm have been formally withdrawn from the Call For Sites.
Canterbury City Council are arranging for the sites to be removed from the mapping system, and there will be no further assessment or progression of these sites.
The parish council has been informed that the owners of the two biggest sites that have been put forward in our parish, shown on the Canterbury City Council’s (CCC) Call for Sites map, did not put the land forward and that they say they do not want the land to be developed.
Unfortunately, it seems CCC can only withdraw the submitted site if the person who originally submitted it asks for it to be withdrawn. The map on the city council website shows all the sites that have been submitted for assessment so far, but these sites are still being assessed and none of them have been allocated. The closing date for submissions is the 9th July.

We are told that it is unlikely that a site where the landowner has no intention of selling the land for development, would be recommended for allocation in the Local Plan, because a key part of the assessment is about whether the land is actually available for development.
After the closing date if any of the sites being put forward by CCC, affect our parish, the parish council will hold a public meeting to listen to what residents have to say.
In the meantime, we will be investigating each site, to be able to put forward arguments why any site may be unsuitable on historic, environmental, infrastructure grounds etc.
We will be requesting that a local housing needs survey is carried out before any decisions are made.
The City Council say it is arranging a parish council session on the Local Plan and Call for Sites where they intend to update all of the parishes.
We all need to work together to get the best outcome for the people of Herne and Broomfield.
