Herne & Broomfield’s Garden Safari will take place on Sunday 12th June 2022.
You are invited to tour our parish and enjoy our varied gardens; we have something for everyone.
One garden includes a listed pond and a deep (90 foot) well, which used to belong to the Millers of our Kentish smock windmill dating from 1789.
Some of the features to look out for are: borders bursting with vibrant or pastel colours, a sea themed rockery, a lovely fig tree, grape vine, tree fern and voodoo lilies.
One garden is exceptional in that the owner has done all of the work one handed after a motorbike accident at 21, when he lost the use of his left arm and hand. Some gardens are wildlife friendly, several have vegetables, fruit, flowers or a pond and one has a greenhouse and tunnel to grow plants for sale.
You can see the restoration work that has been carried out at our local pond, meet the gardeners at our allotments and hear their stories about creating and caring for their plots.
Our horticultural society’s Summer Show is being held on the same day, where you can see more than 20 flower exhibits, including a scented rose to be judged by the public. Flower arrangement classes include ‘The Platinum Jubilee’ theme, along with cookery, handicraft and other exhibits. There will be an ‘Ask the expert’ table for your gardening questions.
Our historic Grade 1 listed St Martin’s church, dates from the 14th century and is a large, handsome structure consisting of three aisles, three chancels and a tower. The grounds of this beautiful historic churchyard area is being sensitively restored to create a haven for wildlife and peaceful sanctuary for reflection and contemplation.
On the outskirts of the parish, enjoy a wander around four acres managed for wildlife, which includes flower borders, a large wildflower meadow and pond, woodland area, vegetable deep beds, fruit trees and chickens. Refreshments will be available at various locations and include: hot & cold drinks, scones, cakes & bread pudding plus chicken or veg curry.
Proceeds will go to Canterbury Food Bank (Charity No. 1153791) and Community Projects in Herne & Broomfield.
