On the 25th April 2023 officers from the Canterbury City Team located and arrested a 22 year old female on suspicion of theft and Burglary other than dwelling. This followed reports on the 24th April of a unknown female entering White Stuff in the City Centre, this female was seen on cctv going behind the counter and stealing a mobile phone from an employee and then leaving the location. This was reported to Whitefriars security as well as the police. On the 25th April 2023 this same female was caught on CCTV removing a handbag from a shopping trolley in Marks and spencer, she left the location but was detained by security who then called the police. Officers attended and arrested the female. The female initially gave false details however these were quickly checked and her real identify was ascertained. She was also outstanding for 2 other very similar matters that had occurred in Gravesend a few days prior. The victim based crime team were able to charge her for all 4 offences and she is due to appear in Margate Magistrates on the 5th June 2023. The handbag was recovered and returned to the rightful owner.
These are unlikely to be isolated incidents and we would urge members of the public to report any other incidents that may have occurred. We would also ask the public to be mindful and careful around the security of their belongings when in public and to keep items and valuables close to them at all times.
