Kent County Council – Temporary Road Closure, 50 & 40 mph Speed Restrictions and Contraflow – A299 Thanet Way, Hernhill, Yorkletts, Whitstable, Chestfield & Herne Bay – 5th April 2024 (Swale & Canterbury Districts)
Due to works planned to be undertaken by Kent County Council, it will be necessary to close part of A299 Thanet Way, Hernhill, Yorkletts, Whitstable, Chestfield & Herne Bay from 5th April 2024, with estimated completion by 20th July 2024.
Temporary mandatory 50mph and 40 mph speed restrictions will be imposed at all times on the A299 Thanet Way, Hernhill, Yorkletts, Whitstable, Chestfield and Herne Bay, from 5th April 2024, with an estimated completion by 20th July 2024.
The temporary mandatory 50mph and 40mph speed restrictions will be imposed in both directions as follows:-
- Whenever there is only a single running lane.
- Through the contraflow section, from approximately 1200 metres to the west side of the Hernhill crossover point to approximately 1200 metres from the east side of the Chestfield tunnel crossover point, and to the extent indicated by signage on site.
It may also be necessary to implement lane 2 closures in both directions between the hours of 05.00 and 19.00 from 5th April 2024 until 13th April 2024 and also between the hours of 05.00 and 19.00 from 13th July 2024 until 20th July 2024 to maintain a safe environment for passing traffic.
It will also be necessary to prohibit the following traffic movements:-
The A299 Thanet Way, Hernhill, Yorkletts, Whitstable, Chestfield and Herne Bay will be closed west bound (London bound) only between the hours of 19.00 and 05.00, from 5th April 2024 until 12th April 2024 and between the hours of 19.00 and 05.00 from 13th July 2024 until 20th July 2024, when the appropriate signage is displayed on site.
It may also be necessary to prohibit the following traffic movements:-
The A299 Thanet Way, Hernhill, Yorkletts, Whitstable, Chestfield and Herne Bay may be closed in both directions at any time between the 5th April 2024 and 20th July 2024, and when the appropriate signage is displayed on site.
This restriction is required as a contingency for any incident responses, vehicle recovery and maintenance to the traffic management equipment.
The alternative route for diverted traffic is as follows:-
A2 Boughton bypass, A2 Harbledown off/on slip eastbound/westbound, A2050 Harbledown bypass, Rheims Way, A290 Rheims Way, A28 Pin Hill, Rhodaus Town, Upper Bridge Street, Lower Bridge Street, Broad Street, Military Road, Tourtel Road, Sturry Road, Mill Road, A291 Sturry Hill, Herne Bay Road, Calcott Hill, Canterbury Road, Herne Street, A299 Thanet Way and vice versa.
The restrictions are required for the safety of the public and workforce while installation, maintenance, removal of a contra-flow traffic management system and major carriageway reconstruction works are undertaken by Kent County Council.
