🚨 Illegal Off-Road Riding – Know the Law
Over the weekend we received further reports of nuisance motorbikes and quad bikes being ridden around Herne. This has been on public footpaths and the farmers fields.
This is not just a nuisance – it is against the law. The more we report to the Police the more likely the vehicles will be seized. It is highly dangerous and someone will be injured unless action is taken.
Under Section 34 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is illegal to ride a motorbike or quad bike on:
Public footpaths
Bridleways
Restricted byways
Common land and other land without lawful authority
🚫 Riding across farmers’ fields without the landowner’s permission is also illegal. Even with permission, riders must not use any public footpath crossing the land and may still face prosecution if they ride dangerously or cause damage or nuisance.
These vehicles put walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wildlife at risk, as well as causing damage to farmland and public spaces.
If you witness illegal off-road riding, please report it to Kent Police. If it is safe to do so, provide the location, time, a description of the riders and vehicles, and any photos or video footage that may assist officers.
