Temporary Road Closure & Speed Restrictions – Various Roads, Kent

1st May 2023 (Canterbury District)

It will be necessary to restrict through traffic on various roads in Kent.

This Order takes effect on or after 1st May 2023 for a period of up to 6 months or until works have been completed. It may be necessary for some of the roads to be closed for multiple occasions for each phase of the works. Planned dates will be published in advanced of the works on One.Network  and indicated by signage displayed on site 14 days before they start.

After the Surface Treatment works, a temporary speed limit of 40 & 20 mph may need to be imposed in place on certain roads for a period of up to 7 days. Where the 40 & 20 mph Speed Limit does apply, this will be clearly indicated by relevant signs displayed on site.

These works are subject to weather and other factors which may potentially cause changes at short notice; every effort will be made to keep as close as possible to the planned dates that are notified, and any changes will be publicised.

SCHEDULE

Road Closures

A28 Ashford Road, Chartham 

The road will be closed between the junctions with Howfield Lane and Hatch Lane, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.

The alternative route is via A28 Thanington Road, A28 Wincheap, A2050 Rheims Way, A2050 Harbledown, A2 London Road, A2 Dover Road, A2 Boughton By-Pass, A2 London Road, A251 Ashford Road, A251 Faversham Road, A252 Canterbury Road, A252 Maidstone Road, A28 Canterbury Road and vice versa.

A249 Detling Hill, Detling (Southbound Only)

The road will be closed between the junctions with Scragged Oak Road and A249 Roundabout over the M20, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.

The alternative route is via M2 (London Bound) J5 to J3, Taddington Wood Roundabout, A229 Bluebell Hill Slip Link Bridge, Lord Lees Roundabout, Bluebell Hill Slip South On, A229 Bluebell Hill (South), Chatham Road, M20 (Coastbound) J6 to J7.

A229 Blue Bell Hill, Aylesford & Chatham Road, Sandling (Southbound only)

The road will be closed between the junctions with Lord Lees Roundabout and Cobtree Roundabout, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.

The alternative route is via A229 Lord Lees Roundabout, Bluebell Hill, Slip Link Bridge, Taddington Wood Roundabout, M2 (Coastbound) J3 to J5, A249 Stockbury Roundabout, Sittingbourne Road (Detling Hill), Detling Hill, Sittingbourne Road, A249 Newnham Court Roundabout, M20 (London Bound) J7 to J6.

A26 Tonbridge Road / A228 Malling Road, Mereworth 

The road will be closed between the junctions with Seven Mile Lane and The Street, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.

The alternative route is via B2016 Seven Mile Lane, A20 London Road, A228 Ashton Bypass, A228 Malling Road and vice versa.

HGVs over 4.4 metres will be escorted through the works to avoid the low bridge on the diversion route.

A2045 Walderslade Woods, Chatham

The road will be closed between the junctions with Bridgewood Roundabout and Tunbury Avenue, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.

The alternative route is via Bridgewood Roundabout, A229 Maidstone Road (North), Tiger Moth Roundabout, Maidstone Road, Horsted Roundabout, A230 Horsted Way, Maidstone Road, Walderslade Road, Princes Avenue, Dargets Road, Dargets Roundabout, Lordswood Lane, A2045 Walderslade Woods and vice versa.

Speed Restrictions

It will be necessary to impose a 40 mph speed limit on the approach to, and then a 20 mph speed limit through, working sites on various roads in Canterbury, as detailed below.

  • A28 Ashford Road, Chartham – between Howfield Lane and Hatch Lane, to the extent indicated by signage on site.
  • A249 Detling Hill, Detling (Southbound) – between the junctions with Scragged Oak Road and A249 Roundabout over the M20, to the extent indicated by signage on site.
  • A229 Blue Bell Hill, Aylesford & Chatham Road, Sandling (Southbound only) – between the junctions with Lords Lees Roundabout and Cobtree Roundabout, to the extent indicated by signage on site.
  • A26 Tonbridge Road / A228 Malling Road, Mereworth – between the junctions with Seven Mile Lane and The Street, to the extent indicated by signage on site.
  • A2045 Walderslade Woods, Chatham – between the junctions with Bridgewood Roundabout and Tunbury Avenue, to the extent indicated by signage on site.

The restrictions are required for the safety of the public and workforce while carriageway preservation works are undertaken by Kent County Council.
