Update – Temporary Road Closure & 40 MPH Speed Restriction – A299 Thanet Way, Whitstable
Update
Due to engineering difficulties the duration of the second phase has been extended as follows:-
The temporary mandatory 40 mph speed restriction will be in place until 9th July 2023.
The final full overnight road closures will now take place on 6th July 2023, for up to 2 nights, although it is expected that only the first night is required.
Lane 2 closures in both directions in the vicinity of the Chestfield tunnel will be in place from 6th July 2023, until midnight on 9th July 2023.
Please also note:-
The A299 Thanet Way will be closed overnight in both directions between the Whitstable and Herne Bay on/off slip roads on 10th July 2023, for 2 nights for the High Speed Road Maintenance programme works to be undertaken.
Previous Update
This is confirmation that the switch over of the contraflow will take place on Saturday and Sunday nights, 27th and 28th May 2023. The Chestfield Tunnel will be closed in both directions on these 2 nights.

Temporary Road Closure & 40 MPH Speed Restriction – A299 Thanet Way, Whitstable – 23rd April 2023 (Canterbury District)
It will be necessary to temporarily prohibit traffic movement on the A299 Thanet Way, Whitstable from 23rd April 2023 with estimated completion by 1st July 2023.
A temporary mandatory 40 mph speed restriction will be imposed on the A299 Thanet Way(Chestfield and Herne Bay) from 23 April 2023, with an estimated competition by 30 June 2023.
The temporary mandatory 40mph speed restriction will be imposed in both directions between the Golden Hill overbridge and the Thornden Wood Road overbridge, and to the extent indicated by signage on site.
It will also be necessary to prohibit traffic movements to enable the traffic management equipment to be laid out, switched over and removed.
The A299 Thanet Way (Whitstable, Chestfield, Herne Bay and Herne and Broomfield) will be closed in both directions between the hours of 20.00 and 06.00 on the following dates :
- For 2 nights on 22nd April 2023 & 23rd April 2023.
- For 2 nights between 26 May 2023 and 30 May 2023
- For 2 nights on 30 June 2023 & 1st July 2023.
The restrictions are required for the safety of the public and workforce while works to install a contra-flow traffic management system to undertake lighting replacement works within the Chestfield Tunnel are undertaken by Kent County Council.
